Semi-Thin Computing

I am happy to say that I am at least partly on the way to a thin computing environment with my server TECT at the center. As of today, I am officially using the virtual machine henry for desktop productivity at home.

I've had TECT for nearly two years, but it has been challenging to "officially decide" to do anything with it, because I have always been (and still am) in the process of learning enough about the various technologies I'm trying to use. Setting up a home virtualization server is, as I have learned, a fairly big challenge. Because of this, I continued using superslab and later eisbrecher and milvax as my "desktop" computers.

However, the purchase of some additional storage, and the accumulation of knowledge about hypervisor environments have prompted me to switch to Microsoft Hyper-V as a role on regular Windows Server (for ease of management) for my hypervisor, and then start preparing henry for use as a virtualized desktop.

I have already started copying files to my home directory (on maithwaite) and other data to the crazyhouse shares server (on elsbridge). The next steps are to adjust some of the current resource utilization, get a real thin client instead of using topham to run the TS Client, and of course bring a better backup solution online. I also (always) need to get rid of some of the oldest and least useful physical machines I've got around.
