Back from Eurovision 2013

I've successfully completed what can probably be called the first vacation I've taken without family members. Cat and Tris were present, which was a good thing, but generally, it was completely free of other people whose role was to tell me specifically what to do. (Let's ignore the fact for a moment that Cat's a lot better at figuring out transit systems in languages other than English, and that she coordinated a lot of it.)

Vacation is fun, but it can also be a whole heck of a lot of work. This year, I joined Cat and Tris on the yearly trek to "somewhere in Europe" to see the Eurovision Song Contest, and have a reasonably good time wherever it was being held.

In particular, we found ourselves staying in Copenhagen, Denmark and commuting to Malmo, Sweden daily for the competition. We also had a few extra days, so we put those at the end of the competition. We used those days to hang out and explore the areas of Copenhagen in reasonably cheap proximity to our Hostel.

Blogging about vacations can be hard, especially for me as I've fallen out of the practice of blogging about everyday life, so I'm putting up this post which is just to say "I've been on vacation, it was fun" and over the next few weeks I'll be writing and posting about specific moments from the vacation, both in an effort to encapsulate the vacation into shareable tidbits, and to hone my skills at writing about life things.

Ultimately, vacation is also very tiring, and I'm very happy to be back. Often, jokes get made about whether or not people will come back from a vacation to a particular desirable location, and I'll be addressing that as well. I also collected an almost insurmountable number of photos, videos, etc from the trip and have my own work cut out for me as I sort through this veritable pile. I'm going to be using this to talk not only about the vacation and things we saw there, but about photography workflow and computing horsepower, because there are some challenges I expect I'll be facing and need to overcome, not the least of which has already hit: disk space on some of my systems is running low, and Aperture and Lightroom (with which I'm experimenting for my photography workflow needs) are not always happy with network volumes or external disks. More on that later, however.
