2012-10-01 Song of the Week

As you may know, I love pop music. To that end, I would be completely remiss to continue having Song of the Week at all, without talking about the hot “new” pop artist that everybody’s been talking about: Carly Rae Jepsen. Go ahead, listen to the song a time or two before you continue.

Maybe. Just, Maybe.

This one’s hard to write about, because Trent Wolbe at The Verge have already posted The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Appreciating Carly Rae Jepsen for Dummies Maybe, which is a really great read, and changed (for the better) the way I listen to the song, and gave me a renewed perspective on pop music.

And so, because The Verge didn’t cover it, and because I’ve been listening to the album on loop lately, I am here to talk about the album surrounding the song.

It takes a few times listening to it, but what I realized to is this: The whole album could easily be the story arc of the vocalists’ relationship with a single person. The album (whose name is Kiss, by the by) starts out with a group of songs about meeting somebody, followed with a song about what happened when you’ve just met somebody – including the famous line, “I just met you, and this is crazy, but call me maybe?” After that, is a group of songs about starting a relationship and getting serious, followed with some songs about being in a relationship, followed by some songs about breaking up. (And there’s also some more generic songs at the tail end of the deluxe version of the album.)

Also, she knows Owl City. There’s no way this plan can fail.

The whole album is great to listen to. Whoever assembled it is very good at what they’re doing, because the first time I listened to it, it was just seconds before I was dancing in place, and even though the album eventually slows down a little bit, I never felt as though I’d reached the song I needed to skip, or the depressing song.
